The Innkeeper is open!

On December 2, 2011 · 8 Comments

We are thrilled to announce The Innkeeper is now open!

I think this quote from Don Quixote sums up perfectly what The Innkeeper is: a cozy local place to relax and find respite.

The menu was designed to offer comfort. Some items are modeled after our time in the Caribbean, like spicy goat [...]

Dinner with Travel Writer, Andrea Wren

On April 27, 2011 · 12 Comments

One of the pleasures I’ve found blogging is “meeting” other people who love to travel as much as I do. I’d yet to meet one of those travelers in person, until Andrea Wren of Travelling Wren emailed from England saying she was coming to Seattle and invited me to join her for a hosted dinner at Pan Pacific Hotel. I was thrilled.

On March 14, 2011 · 28 Comments

Today is a big day in my family’s life. Black Bottle Postern opens its doors to the public for the first time today. My husband, Brian, is the chef, and he and I are partners in the venture.

We moved to Seattle six years ago to open the first Black Bottle. It was a pretty sweet [...]

Cooking school in Japan: main courses

On September 28, 2010 · 20 Comments

The prep work and the dashi were finished so the chef instructor at the cooking school in Tokyo moved on to the main courses.

First up was Braised Meat and Vegetables, Japan’s take on beef stew, which used dashi for the broth.

We moved into the kitchen to start the teriyaki chicken stuffed with asparagus, which reminded me not to complain about the [...]

Tokyo: A chef's tour

On September 1, 2010 · 12 Comments

But once in a while, being a chef has its rewards. Those rewards are even greater if you’re married to the chef.

We’re co-owners Black Bottle, a gastro [...]

Our chef, and an attempt at a recipe

On January 21, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Brian did a lot of planning, shopping for, cooking, and serving of the three daily meals, but his additional responsibilities meant a second cook was a requirement.

So we hired a local chef. I’ll call him “Check”. Check and I got off to a bad start. On day one, our toddler and new puppy were wrestling, [...]
